So with the cold mornings already upon us in beautiful NJ, i think it is time i pull the trigger and do a remote start.

I'm looking for opinions on what i should go with.

I am looking for the most basic and simplistic remote start available.

I do not want to tear into my truck, i really would love something plug and play. I know Yates posted one last year but I haven't seen that thread updated in quite a while.

I don't want the remote start to do anything but start the truck. No fancy security systems for me, i just want my truck warm when i get into it.

Any one have any opinions?

i love my viper,

i had auto image in somerville install it with a lifetime warranty. and i did have a issue once and they fixed it no charge.

i think all said and done it was like 450 or something installed. it just locks, unlocks and remote starts. great range too.

Had Viper on my old Sierra. Loved it. The range was good and was programmed to roll the windows down with the remote. I would go with Viper again when it comes time to buy one.

Viper all day long. But the catch is if you want the lifetime warranty, you must get it installed at an authorized dealer. That pretty much doubles the price. I have always installed my own shit, but then again I actually KNOW how to install shit. If you have never installed one, it will DEFINITELY be more than you can handle. So either get a cheap plug and play or fork out the dough to have it properly installed.

And remote starts are pretty much the same price as an all in one FYI. My compustar was like $380 installed for just remote start.

IMO i love my viper
here is the basic remotestart & security 2 way $154.99 W/Free Shipping
http://www.amazon.com/VIPER-VEHICLE...?ie=UTF8&qid=1445600080&sr=8-1&keywords=5305V
here is the basic remote start only 1 way $68.19 W/prime
http://www.amazon.com/Viper-4115V-1...?ie=UTF8&qid=1445600247&sr=8-1&keywords=4115V
and i believe for either one you are going to need a interface adapter such as this
Amazon.com : XpressKit DBALL2 Databus All Combo Bypass Module : Car Electronics
also if you get the two way you should be able upgrade the remote to one of their high end ones like this:

The alarm itself is great. The fobs suck. Buttons stick and it freaks the alarm out. Back battery cover on the non use model was flimsy. We had a thread here or GMFS about it.

I've had a viper and a compustar. I can say the compustar was a better product. My only gripe at the time was expandability and options. Viper, aka directed had that market for sure. Now compustar has everything, even the "smartstart" and their service is more reliable (from what I have read, I cannot verify personally yet) and has less glitches than viper's. Both yearly service agreements are comparable in price. Compustar system is cheaper than viper

I see alot of broken battery covers when customers hand over there keys to us also

Mine has been broken since a few months after I bought mine, I look on eBay all the time for a replacement but they are usually too expensive :/

You get what you pay for on alarms I had 3 2way and will never own anything but compustar again

only bitch i have about my 2 way is, ill hit remote start and it will go oh fuck u couldnt connect, then i get closer and hit it again and its like oh shutting down now.... fuck off!

The alarms sometimes wakes the truck up during deep sleep, and causes the bcm to stay on, draw on the battery, next thing you know your battery is drained. I took it back to the shop, and they were having this problem with all their alarms.

I had to make a kill switch if i wasnt going to use the truck for 3 days, so it wouldnt die, cause of the damn alarm.

No problems with my viper. The controllers fucked though

My remote just died after a year and a half of use. I have the Same problems like jered. The LCD has ink on the top ad the last couple of months does not charge right . And today it just took a dump, the regular remote somehow broke after never being used.

I would suggest that the viper remotes suck balls

I have a 671XV on my 01 and i dont even use it anymore because of the $150-to-replace remote. It worked fine for about 2.5yr, but then it started making the LOUD beeeeeeeep beeeeeeeeeeeeep noise (like the battery is going dead) anytime a button is pushed - among other quirky things that started after 2-3 years. So fuck it, might try it again, prolly not.

Stock alarm ftw.

My avital lasted 4 years or so, until I sold the Tahoe. Never an issue. Again, it wasn't the alarm, just the key fob, keep up ginger

That being said, I plan on remote start with just the app for our Tacoma, Either the Viper or Compustar, no fob wanted or needed, and I will just get the cheapies to have as spares in case an issue arises. I don't want to big fobs in my pocket. OEM remote start have limited range, so I dont feel the need to pay all that money to upgrade it.

Problem I had with my 5701 viper remote was the battery. The connection sucked. Was constantly resetting. Would lose contact all the damn time. You could just set it on the counter and it would sit there and wig out. Try to unlock the door and you have to hit the button 13 times and time it just right when it was having its fits. Finally took the back off and bent the contact and used electrical tape to tape it tight.
Had my compustar for 5 years. Never a problem.

Oh. Had the same problem smiggs did too. Parasitic drain somewhere after install that was unexplained. Brain was replaced under warranty. Same issue
