S10 spacer question/advice

Thinking of putting 17x9 00-02 Camaro SS 10 spokes on my 87 2wd S10 but after researching I've found that at minimum, a 2.25" spacer is required. 2.5" will ensure proper clearance.

For those that run spacers or have in the past, what's your limit? How wide do you trust a spacer? What kind of stress is it putting on the studs?

Any advice on longevity and safety issues is much appreciated.
 
I had 1.75" spacers on my 98 S10 and I always had some kind of vibration. I hated them. They were on aftermarket wheels. Ended up putting old Iroc Z wheels on that required no spacers and rode like a dream.

My spacers were like $30 on ebay. Maybe that's the culprit.
