i have a chevy 1972 pickup truck, everything on the truck is original, but i want to fix it up and upgrade the suspension and possibly the chassis.. But I'm just wondering if I should put new suspension on the original chassis, or should i get a new chassis? I plan on putting in a big block engine but don't know yet about the transmission other than I want it to be automatic.

Welcome to CGM.

Really depends on what kind of budget you have. Full roadster shop chassis would be soo nice but I think their chassis for 67-72 is like $10k. Give or take depending on what parts they put on it. And that's for coilovers, not bags. You could bag it fairly cheap. Assuming it's a factory 4 link rear.

Look into ls swapping aswell. They are cheap, easy to work on and make great power while still getting great mpg compared to a big block.

Throw up some pictures when you get a chance. I think everybody here loves 67-72s. Lol.

I heard C10... and then there were no pics

:yuno: y u no post pics? lol.

Either way. I know that if you want to spend a little less, there's this guy named John Hotchkis, that has some pretty awesome options for your application.

And I will 2nd the LS swap idea. Even if you found a junkyard LQ4 or LQ9... that would be the bomb-diggity.

if the frame is in good shape, keep it, swap some porterbuilt stuff underneath. you can stiffen up the chassis with their frame stiffener and that gives you the ability to use trailing arms or a 4 link, then use their front control arms kit, if you want to do bags.

if you want coilovers, ridetech has their strongarm kits for the front, fully bolt-in, as well as their rear kit. Trucks :: 1963-1972 Chevy C10 - CoilOver Suspension - Level 2 - RideTech.com - Suspension Specialist - Online Store

when you get into a custom frame build, it gets exponentially more expensive. and not knowing your budget or what you're trying to do with the truck, makes us take shots in the dark.

for a trans, you can get a nice built th400 from FTI for under $1600 capable of handling 800 hp

Go with porterbuilt, they make dropmembers for both bags and coilovers. Definitely worth the coin. It'll handle anything you throw at it.

Don't know why I didn't me too porterbuilt last night. Definitely porterbuilt if you are just looking at lowering and keeping the stock frame.

There's a lot of budget mods using factory components you can do to reduce bump steer, add some caster, lessen body roll, and tighten up the steering if you're fairly mechanically competent. Save some money this way and gain a sense of gratification. Porterbuilt, ridetech, Scott's hot rod stuff is nice, but if you have any sort of a budget then you may reconsider it. If anyone is interested let me know, I'm not going to type out a shit ton of its not needed or wanted.

Sounds like useful info that needs to be on the site for future use imo. Maybe make a thread about it if you have some free time?

I'll have to set aside some time to get on the computer and write a good post. The front suspension mods pretty much carry over from 60-87, the rear end changes a little bit. Overall concepts stay the same though.

Gotcha. Couldn't hurt to have it here so we can direct anyone with questions to it. Make it a good one and we can sticky it so it'll be easily accessible. :shake:
