I can't find a paintable (01-02*) Hd grille anywhere. Does it exist or does everyone sand the chrome off the stock one or sumthin?

I had my grille painted on my truck awhile back. I took it to a shop, idk the painting process they did or what, but i dont think they sanded it. Its held up great for the past couple months since.

I don't know how it would stick if they didn't sand it. It's too slick. I'm jw because the painter I normally use says he can't do it. So got a find someone else I guess. I don't want an aftermarket grille. OEM only.

Just have them sand the chrome and use an etching primer, that's what we did on a 1500 grille for a friend and it still looks good a few years later.

In that case your shitouttaluck, def no OEM without chrome bar. Strip it off and take it to him

no, you must sand the chrome and paint. IMO sand all the chrome off, because if you go through at any point it will just begin to peel. take the time and do it right.

I'll just sand it myself then I guess. The grille I'm planning on buying is peeling a bit already anyway and I have plenty time to sand it.

I was wrong. Texted painter who painted grille, he said he bascilly did this.
Prep the shit out of it with red scotch brite.
Couple coats of sealer and then base coat clear coat.

Edit: found this picture he took while painting it. Idk if it helps or not but here.

Oh ok. I see. Sounds good. I know another guy at a collision shop and texted him and he said he can do it. I can't wait cuz I'm getting this thing cheap.

Not if prepped right, but when sanding it, if you go through the chrome, you can just start peeling it off

Well hopefully I can peel the chrome off when I get it. It's all wrinkly and peeling up so that's why I'm getting it cheap. The guy just bought a factory replacement.

If the bowtie looks like it's separating, can't it just be sanded smooth and painted or should I get a new stock one and sand/paint it?
