What the fuck is wrong with my truck?

Idk how to create my own forum so I'm just gonna write this in this one , okay I have a 99 silverado 5.3 v8 4 speed auto 4x4 & just yesterday my trucks been acting weird when it's cold . I go to drive it I. The mornings and it would shift from 1st to 2nd around 10mph then it'll shift late to 3rd for some reason but it's only when the engines cold ? Why??

It seems like the truck is programmed to hold back like that. I am not sure if it is because it is trying to warm the engine up, or if it is just sluggish. So it holds is gears longer. But it's normal, my truck does it till it starts moving towards operating temp.

mine only does it for like 2-3 minutes max... maybe it makes a difference in what oil you use

Letting the truck warm up when benefit you greatly in all aspects man. I see many people crank it up and haul ass, then wonder why they cracked the head or blew a head gasket. Warming up an engine faster than it would on its own equals bad news. Maybe 20-30 seconds of warmup idling helps a lot and is a good habit.

But Yea that's totally normal. The converter won't lock when it's cold. The pcm is set that way.

I pretty much remote start mine and by the time I get in it and buckle my seat belt, it's good to go. And by the time I get out of My neighborhood where it's 30mph anyway, the converter will lock fine.

Yup. Exactly.

Try letting it sit in 30* weather for 2-3 days without moving.

Then immediately get in, start it and try moving. It will neutral out or require 2,000 rpm's to even move.

And yes, you're* fine.

As stated, it's normal. And it's not just our trucks that do it. Most cars will do the same thing or something similar.

What they said, my truck won't go into overdrive (4th) unless its at a certain temp. I let mine warm up anytime its below freezing, around theffreezing point I just warm it up while I smoke and the colder it gets I let it warm up longer so the needle has come up to the bottom of the range, 160 I think but according to my scan tool that's actually only 100*. I also am easy on it until its been at operating temperature for a while to gets the oil warmed also.

I almost always, turn the key to on let all the lights and chimes cycle through, let the fuel pump "prime", then turn it on, let idle until rpms drop below 1k then go.

If it's cold out I won't even bring it up past 2k rpms until the temp gauge is at least moving

It's because your transmission is about to explode. You need to start saving up money because it is going to cost you, at minimum, $33,000 to rebuild it. If I was you, I would skip dinner or breakfast for the next couple of weeks. If you have kids, see if someone can watch them for a few days. Sell your dogs too. DO NOT drive your truck, if the transmission goes all of your airbags will deploy and kill you. I would also contact an attorney and have them file a last will and healthcare directive for you. Park your truck a safe distance from your house and sprinkle salt around it. If at all possible, have a Catholic Priest bless it.

But yes OP, let your truck warm up a bit, my last 2 chevys have done the same.

(They both have also had transmission problems, but I'm 100% sure that was self-inflicted )

My old vette in hs used to do the same thing when it was cold.
Colder it was, worse it was.
Hold first gear and fawkin slam second.

Well, it slammed almost every gear when cold for that matter lol
Once warmed up. All good.
