This morning when I cranked my truck up and it got down to a idle it just coughed and died and its been doing it all day so I figured it was just the fuel filter. I went to go get one and the guy told me my truck doesn't have one that it's in the pump itself which is $424 so I crawled under the truck and he's right, no filter at all. I thought all 01-06 silverados had the same kind of filter but apparently mine doesn't because the 8th letter in the vin is a T. I would rather not replace the pump right now unless absolutely necessary, what should I try? My truck is an 04 silverado 1500 5.3.

So my best bet is just to run a fuel stabilizer through it and hope for the best?

Nope, you're gonna havta put a pump in it. That's most likely the pump starting to fail as well, not just a filter.

Does the pump scream real loud? How many miles?

I put a bottle of Lucas fuel system cleaner in it and been letting it run for a little while at a time and it hasn't done it anymore but I know it's just a matter of time until it does it again.

Yeah you may get lucky and it last a while or it may quit tonight. There's no telling. Just to be safe I'd throw a pump in it

I hope it lasts a while but I'm gonna put a new pump on as soon as I can just to be safe, I don't see why they would make it where you have to buy a new pump to change the filter, seems stupid to me.

it could have thrown another code besides just cats. so it could be a completely different problem. go scan it see what the code/codes are

You know there could be more than one code right? Not like the fact it is throwing a code will affect how it runs. Oh that was sarcasm

Would a plug and play tuner fix this? I really want to get my truck custom tuned but I haven't heard of anybody around here that's good and I don't want to take it to just anybody.

No, a plug and play programmer doesnt allow you to totally ignore or block DTCs. It only allows you to clear the check light which inturn will just come back on.

You CEL is on for your rear o2 sensors since you modified the cats, which really those sensors wont effect performance so no need to worry to much. However the truck can be throwing other codes you just dont realize because the CEL is always on.

You may have Intake manifold gasket leak, MAF sensor issue or other issues that are hidden. You need to get the codes its throwing read, write them all down and report back here. Autozone/orielly/napa will read codes free of charge.

if you are getting a MAF sensor codes then more than likely its not the pump, I wouldnt start swapping a pump without fully diagnosing the issue by following the codes its throwing.
