New to cars

Hey im pretty much new to cars i was in the army sense i was 17 and just got out last month and kinda fell into a point where my life was pretty low due to depression so my cousin took me to a drag race and fell in love with the sport so he got me a 77 nova with what he said is a 383 and a 850 carb it fires up but when i hit the gas it just dies what causes the car to just die he says its my ignition wire has a open wire hitting metal and its shorting out is it true

could be timing, could be a shitty carb.


lots of factors.

i would check timing first. should be somewhere between 30-40 degrees.
