Yes, I know, its not a GM.

2000 Tacoma
3.4L

On the way to work this morning and my cab fills with steam. Figured I busted a hose. Nope. Top tank on radiator has a 6" long crack and is spewing steam everywhere. Fuck. Call my boss (who is an ex mechanic and a billionaire). He says limp it to our shop which is about 2 miles away. Get halfway there and motor makes a horrid sound then cuts off by itself. Temp gauge is maxed out. Check engine light is flashing. Steam is still only coming from the cracked radiator.

How fucked am I? Did the motor die or cut itself off to prevent damage?

First things first...you defiantly should have looked at any coolant level

Sounds like you overheated it pretty bad. If you got lucky, it'll free itself up, but the chances of damage are pretty high.

Has the truck restarted yet?

Sounds like the motor may have crapped out.

Hopefully it still turns over once it cools down. But like Brando said with them high temps there is a good chance damage was done or at least cut the life expectancy way down.

Did you get the truck to your bosses auto shop?

I didn't try to restart it. Didn't wanna fuck it up anymore.

Yea my boss came and pulled me. I wanted him involved in the process as much as possible since he sold it to me. He's a pretty nice guy and rather wealthy so hopefully he'll help me out on this. If not, I is fucked.

I know I probably did the exact opposite of what I should've done. When I first stopped, the temp gauge was reading normal so I assumed it'd be ok for a mile or so. Didn't work how I planned it.

That's exciting news.

I explained everything to my buddy who builds Toyota motors and described the sound (almost an extremely loud exhaust leak about the last 100 ft of the journey) and he said I cracked the head.

I won't know anything til someone looks at it closer. I'm stuck at work on a loader for 12 hours, so unless my boss tells one of our mechanics to look at it, I will have no clue until tomorrow what's wrong.

Look at it this way, gives you a chance to put an LS motor under the hood now.

I've had a buyer lined up since day one......and it happens to be my Toyota buddy. He wasn't thrilled about my phone call.

This is royally fucking up my slammed 2wd dreams.

Well a 3.4 long block is $3200 (worst case scenario)

Heads are $325 a piece (still not a good scenario)

Complete gasket set is $300 (probably needed)

Radiator is $145 (need regardless)

Like ginger said, oil was hot enough that you might as well of ran water. Get super thin, super hot and if it didn't seize the crank bearings to the crank or spun a rod bearing or even seized everything together, it'll be a miracle.
