Exhaust diameter discussion

So I am trying decide which route I am going to take on the exhaust for the G8. Right now I have JBA shorty headers (previous owner) into what looks to be an aftermarket mid muffler (unsure of brand-around 18" case length) at 2.5" all the way to my Solo J pipes and tips.

I have a 2.5" x pipe someone gave me, that I was planning on running and removing the mid muffler when I do my cam swap. However, I think that will end up being way too loud, and the potential for insane raspy exhaust seem almost certain. I know I can adjust the j pipe to help with drone if needed.

My options are to buy a cheaper set of headers, and keep what I have and install the x pipe portion and make it all work; or, I can do something like a kooks setups that replaces everything and then buy 3" inlet tips. The latter being rather expensive! Or I can get cheap headers and run those into 3" all the way back.

My question is, will a car REALLY benefit from the 3" upgrade enough to justify the cost over the setup I have now? For reference, the car should be around 420-430hp with the cam and supporting mods.

I'd like to keep it as is to save some money, but I also do not want to lose potential power. I've read different debates. It seems some say anything less than 500 or so won't benefit greatly from the small change. On the other hand, some say that it is rather noticeable.

Thoughts?

I'm not a G8 wiz by any means so I may be speaking out of school but I think it wouldn't benefit you until you hit super high horsepower numbers. I believe the C6 Corvette has a 2.5" exhaust at 430hp and most don't upgrade that until they hit around 500hp.

As far as piping size, you won't feel it on the butt dyno. I went from stock 2.5/2.75 (2.75 was only in a couple spots, ford is fucking retarded with exhaust design) to full 3" on my coyote and it didn't gain any noticable power. Just made it louder than the same setup at 2.5"

As for the X, it will make it higher pitched but it will scavenge better and help lessen the drone over just duals or an H.

If it were my car, I'd fine some decent budget longtubes, do the X mid pipe, your Js, and some whatever muffler floats your boat. And just tune on the Js till the drone is gone
