Hey everyone.

I've been doing a lot of searching on Performance Trucks and also on GMFS in the cam sticky...but just wanted to get some of your guys' opinions.

I'm very (and by very I mean within the next couple of days) close to pulling the trigger on a cam and stall. I've gone back and forth between a variety of combinations, and someone on GMFS tipped me off to get a custom grind cam from BEI. After thinking about that...I would love to do a custom cam, but I've got to assume that the blank is about $150 and then about $350 to grind with a $500 tune. Being that the 5.3 is such a popular engine I've got to think that the out of the box cams are going to give me more than what I'm looking for, plus I've already got the auto cal from blackbear so I can't justify paying all that money for it to have it tuned on the dyno. Probably can't go wrong either way...I know most are very happy with Justin and his tunes for cams.

So...for what I do and what I've researched...the TSP 220r seems like a very good choice that suits my needs and pairs up nice with a 3200 stall. I've read that in some instances people have run 3600 with this cam, but that is just not something I am interested in doing I don't think.
For those of you that don't know, I'm on a 6" lift with 20x12s and 33s....4.11 Yukons, Doug Thorley Long Tubes. Going to get the Tru Cool 40K as well.

I don't tow (often), so I don't want to completely lose my bottom end, but even with this cam/stall I think being on 33s and 4.11s will help a lot.

Truck is a DD...mostly backroad driven...but sees the sand dunes up at Silver Lake about every other weekend.

My question comes into play with: what size stall converter should I be looking at? I've been looking at Circle D. I understand that the bigger the stall, the tighter it will be.
One guy on Performance Trucks was saying that the 278mm was not a true 3200 and shouldn't be considered a "high performance stall", so I was thinking about maybe going to the 265mm single disk.

I don't want to be too loose, but I definitely want to pair the correct stall size with this cam. I'm assuming I don't need to spend the extra $300 on a triple disk 'verter..but maybe someone can chime in.

Am I on track? Circle D, Yank, TSI....???

Thanks all

Check with several people. Brian Tooley can spec you out a cam, Pat Guerra, Lil John Motorsports, you have many options.

As far as the stall, Circle D seems to have a good following, but lately I've been hearing of you don't go triple disk, go with someone else. Look at FTI, Coan and Yank too.

For what it's worth, my G8 will be getting either a Coan, FTI or Yank. Most likely FTI. Just got to do more research before I am ready to pull the trigger.

Here is my scoop on the budget circle D 3200.

Its basically a Trailblazer stall cut open and re-stalled slightly higher, Iv NEVER seen them 60' anything close to impressive and honestly i would say its closer to a 3000 rpm stall.
With that being said, beings its a OE style/size converter they are great for everyday driving, and towing which seems to be your primary concern. I will say take a look a look into the yank truck truster 3000 IMO a comparable converter just slightly better from my experience.

Being you plan to tow although not often and drive back roads I think you chose a great cam. Only others I'd suggest is the EPS truck torque level 2. Or the vinci trucker cam. All of these will work great with a 3000-3200ish converter. I also would not suggest stepping up to a 3600 stall due to your intended use, and if you wanted to you would need a multi disk for towing.

I think your on the right track, that 220r and a 3000-3200ish converter would work well together and for what you looking to get out of it i think it would make you happy.
The only other insight i would give would be to possibly look into going to a 4:30 or 4:56 gears, i may catch some heat for that but I will admit I tend to always lean to a lower gear set than most.
